Batting 1000 Endowment for Children and Youth

Young people who care about their communities are increasingly getting involved in philanthropy.

By forming youth advisory committees (YACs) within local community foundations, young people come together to raise money, build endowment funds and make grants to local youth projects. YACs are in their teens and twenties, with a lot of ideas and energy to bring to the table.

There are already YACs in more than 55 communities across Canada, and the momentum is building.

In 2004 we launched the Batting 1000 Youth Advisory Council (YAC) within the Saskatoon Community Foundation. Our YAC enhances the quality of life for Saskatoon children and youth by disbursing grants from the Batting 1000 Endowment for Children and Youth. The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) has announced its sixth round of grants for the spring of 2010. In 2010, the Youth Advisory Council gave preference to projects in the following priority areas:

  1. Environmental Stewardship: Protection, conservation, and sustainability of our environment and promoting its awareness in the community.
  2. Diversity: Promotion of cultural awareness and acceptance
  3. Abuse Prevention: Helping people prevent abuse or helping them deal with currently existing abuse problems. These types of abuse could include emotional, substance, physical, and sexual abuse.
  4. Human Development: Promoting positive growth in youth including recreational opportunities.
  5. Family Support: Positive programs that supports healthy relationship in families.
  6. Poverty Relief: Assisting families with children or youth directly affected by poverty and supporting relief efforts.
  7. Education: Promoting and organizing recreational activities such as visual arts, physical activities, field trips and other extra-curricular activities in schools.
