POTASHCORP SASKATOON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION CULTURAL GALA
In 2017, the Potashcorp Saskatoon Community Foundation Cultural Gala broke new ground for the Saskatoon Community foundation in so many ways. During the first 10 years of the Gala, SCF offered an incomparable experience featuring entertainment focused on the diverse cultures which make Saskatoon such a wonderful community. In 2017, with the addition of a theme based in reconciliation and a production team unlike any we have engaged before, the event reached a new level of professionalism and thematic connection. This year’s Gala also created new partnerships, new opportunities and new relationships, in addition to raising over $260,000 for the good of the community.
A diverse committee of dedicated volunteers planned the Gala around the theme of wâseskwan, a Cree word meaning the sky is clearing. The theme acknowledged the dark truth of our Canadian history, the stormy time of residential schools and the social and political exclusion of indigenous peoples, in even sharper relief on this 150th anniversary of the birth of our country, while also lighting the way to a brighter future and a more inclusive and welcoming community. We must acknowledge the invaluable assistance of our cultural advisors Eugene and Lorna Arcand. Their wisdom helped to guide our decisions and ensure that the event would be conducted with the appropriate spirit.
Emcees Leanne Bellegarde and John Lagimodiere helmed the event, which featured red carpet and reception entertainment from Bluejay Linklater, Scott’s Yoga, KSAMB Dance, Little Prairie Steppers, Can-Am Gymnasts and Lancelot Knight. Zoey Roy opened the proceedings with her unique blend of poetry and political fire. The multi-media feature performance used projection screens, multiple stages, and a seamlessly choreographed joining of many artists and many voices, including Zoey Roy, Josh Palmer, Darrell Bueckert, Megan Kent and Sara Krueger, Joseph Ashong, Theodore Bison of Charging Bear Productions, and local stars Andrea Menard and Donny Parenteau.
Major sponsors contributed not only funds, but also shared their own visions for reconciliation as part of the performance. Throughout the evening, artist Kevin Pee-ace worked on a painting which would be auctioned toward the end of the evening. Young indigenous entrepreneurs Tasty Towne Catering honed their skills by contributing the appetizer to the gourmet meal themed around traditional foods including bison, trout, duck, wild rice and bannock. And of course, live and silent auctions offered wonderful opportunities for attendees to contribute to the vision before the evening was capped with an electrifying set by Donny Parenteau and his band.
