Saskatoon Community Foundation Grants $65,000 to CHEP Good Food Inc.

2007 Signature Grant Goes to CHEP Good Food to Purchase a Refrigerated Cube Truck

CHEP Good Food will use the grant, worth $65,000 this year, to purchase a refrigerated cube truck to deliver food. Today, they’re using a regular van with no refrigeration and little extra space. Each night the van has to be unpacked and the contents refrigerated. The new truck will have much more space and will keep food cool over night.

“The new truck will help us respond more effectively to the community and will save us time and money. Currently we rent a cube truck every week and we spend at least an hour a day loading and unloading our van,” said Karen Archibald, Executive Director of CHEP Good Food. “We’ll be able to deliver more food more efficiently with the new truck. This will enable us to add more sites to our weekly nine Seniors’ Stores program and to deliver good food boxes to more than 1000 families each month. The third area to benefit will be CHEP’s bulk produce program for children’s nutrition programs. CHEP partners with 43 different children’s programs which ensure nutritious food for kids in many Saskatoon neighbourhoods. Staff and Board at CHEP look forward to ramping up food security programs.”

“We’re glad to have an opportunity to support CHEP’s contribution to the community. Each year, our new Signature Grant will be a large grant to a local charity taking a strategic approach to a local issue. Good nutrition is foundational to good health,” said Trevor Forrest, Executive Director of Saskatoon Community Foundation.

CHEP Good Food is now shopping for their new vehicle.

CHEP Good Food exists to work with children, families and communities to improve access to good food and to achieve food security. Food security means everyone has assured access to adequate, appropriate and personally acceptable food in a way that promotes health, respect and dignity; where people are able to earn a living wage by growing, producing a, processing, handling, retailing and serving food; where the quality of land, air, and water is maintained and enhanced for future generations; and in which food is celebrated as central to community and cultural integrity. www.chep.org
