Quality of Life Grants Total $200,000 in 2007
In the first major granting cycle of 2007, Saskatoon Community Foundation
awarded $203,385. In total, 37 organizations received 38 grants. We awarded
grants in seven different focus areas.
Family and Community $30,885
Funding for projects, or ongoing work, that creates caring, safe and supportive environments for healthy social development and healthy families.
$5,000 to Elmwood Residences to purchase furniture for the front entrance.
$9,885 to Friendship Inn to help serve two meals a day to those in need.
$5,000 to Saskatchewan Association for Community Living for the Parents Forever Program, This program offers enriched parenting classes for adults who self declare as slow learners.
$5,000 to Radius Community Centre to support a program that ensures parents of children with disabilities can remain attached to the workforce.
$6,000 to Saskatoon Student Child Care Services Inc to develop a 6 space infant room to better serve the needs of young parents enrolled at Royal West Campus
Education: $34,600
Funding for projects, or on-going work, that enhances the quality and accessibility of lifelong learning and educational opportunities for all ages.
$4,300 to Sexual Health Centre Saskatoon for a library update and expansion.
$10,000 to Saskatchewan Intercultural Association for My Way. This 10-month program aims at enhancing and broadening the employability skills, and educational and occupational options of young immigrant and refugee women.
$3,800 to Confederation Park School for a Summer Speech-Language and Reading Program for kindergarten and grade one students.
$2,500 to Tamara’s House to develop and print a Survivor’s Manual.
$10,000 to Global Gathering Place to English a Second Language instruction.
$4,000 to L’Arche Saskatoon to purchase a portable video projector, laptop
computer, and a digital camera in order to present to service clubs, church
groups and businesses. L’Arche creates community for people with developmental
disabilities.
Human Development $39,550
Funding for projects, or ongoing work, that enhances and nurtures children and youth, helping them to achieve self-fulfillment with respect for others, and to develop their potential to the best of their ability.
$5,000 for Camp Tamarack, a therapeutic and educational residential summer program for children and teens with Learning Disabilities.
$5,000 to Care & Share Saskatoon for a Babysitter Program. This program provides a certification course for students who are twelve years and old who do not have the financial means to pay for the course.
$1,500 to YMCA for the YMCA Summer Day Camp offering opportunities to children and youth in Saskatoon and area regardless of ability to pay.
$10,000 for the Rotary Club of Saskatoon for the Restorative Action Program (RAP), designed to help young people resolve personal conflicts in their lives and develop life skills that will assist them to become mature and responsible adults.
$1,800 to Saskatoon Preschool Foundation to subsidize six preschool positions.
$3,250 to Heart of the City Piano Program to teach piano lessons at inner city schools.
$6,000 to Saskatchewan Association for Community Living. This funding supports youth with disabilities spending time with youth without disabilities in order to foster understanding and relationships.
$5,000 to Community First Development Fund of Sask. Inc. for the Saskatoon Individual Development Account (IDA) Program. Saskatoon IDAs help low income youth save money for a specific goal or purpose. Each dollar saved is matched by a donor. Participants also receive financial literacy training.
$2,000 to Kids Help Phone to support attendance at the Kids Help Phone
Student Ambassador Training Conference in Saskatoon.
Health: Total Funding for Health $30,000
Funding for projects, or on-going work, that promotes and advances the physical and mental well-being of individuals and families
$7,500 to Crocus Co-op for Growing Crocus with Gardening. This program educates the community by offering a phone-in/walk-in service staffed by a summer student and volunteer Master Gardeners. The community outreach service helps break down the barriers and the stigma of mental illness by inviting the greater community a way to experience Crocus in a completely new fashion. The gardening program also helps build skills for a yard maintenance work program.
$8,000 for SWITCH - Student Wellness Initiative Toward Community Health. SWITCH is student-managed, with professional mentors, offering primary health care services to the core neighbourhoods.
$8,000 to Schizophrenia Society of Saskatchewan for The Partnership Program, aimed at educating the public about schizophrenia and reducing the stigma and misconceptions attached to it and those affected.
$4,000 to Schizophrenia Society of Saskatchewan for REC Group (Recreation, Education and Caring) a support group with the goal of improving the lives of people living with schizophrenia in Saskatoon through enjoyable recreation, creative learning and mutual support.
$2,500 to Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association. This grant will assist in covering the costs of special transportation and attendant care to facilitate attendance at the SBIA Survivor and Family Camp.
Arts and Culture $21,100
Funding for projects, or on-going work, that fosters and supports the growth
and preservation of arts and cultural activities.
$3,000 to Saskatchewan Writers Guild for the Visiting Writer School residency
program in which a professional writer spends two weeks in a school teaching
creative writing, conducting writing workshops and holding individual
consultations with students.
$6,500 for the Northern Saskatchewan Children’s Festival for Rejuvenation: A
Twentieth Anniversary Project
$1,600 for Friends of the Broadway Theatre to purchase, install and secure a
computer in the theatre’s community box office.
$10,000 for Saskatchewan Native Theater Company for a youth empowerment
program that supports at-risk youth in achieving their personal, social,
education, and career goals and aspirations.
Environment $12,000
Funding for projects, or on-going work, that supports and encourages appreciation of the environment, or resolution to, and prevention of, environmental and wildlife issues.
$5,000 to Partners FOR the Saskatchewan River Basin to revise the Water Watchdog Program for Saskatoon schools.
$5,000 to Mendel Art Gallery for Living Artfully: Waterfront Art Craft & Eco-Fair.
$2,000 to Meewasin Valley Authority for the Youth Canoe Tour Program which
take groups of inner city youth onto the South Saskatchewan River in voyageur
canoes and provides a nature study program.
Research, Strategy, and Capacity Building $35,200
Funding for projects, or on-going work, that establishes foundations for community service, develops or enhances organizational strategy, or builds capacity in our community.
$5,000 to Leadership Saskatoon to subsidize participants unable to afford the entire tuition.
$1,500 to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Saskatoon Area Inc. for an Aboriginal Mentoring research project.
$10,000 to READ Saskatoon, for Counting the Ripples: Strategic Thinking and Sustainability Planning. Counting the Ripples is involves an organizational review and program evaluation, as well as development of a sustainability plan, to achieve READ Saskatoon’s objectives.
$3,750 to Musee Ukraina Museum Inc. This funding will assist the board of directors and its development committee in the planning, preparations and production of promotional and campaign material as it embarks on its building campaign to replace the current museum building.
$10,000 to Saskatoon Community Youth Arts Programming Inc (SCYAP) to develop capacity to research and attract both operational funding and project funding from new sources including provincial and federal government departments and private funders.
$5,000 for the Saskatchewan Association for the Rehabilitation of Brain Injured Inc. This funding will support a needs assessment for Grassroots Acquired Brain Injury Services.
