Foundation celebrates milestones
THE STARPHOENIX DECEMBER 1, 2010
The Saskatoon Community Foundation is celebrating two milestones this year.
This year, which marks its 40th anniversary, the foundation gave away more than $1 million to local charities.
Its first grant was made in 1973. It was a $600 donation to the Council for Crippled Children and Adults, which later became the Saskatchewan Abilities Council, to renovate its prosthetics workshop. Since beginning in 1970, the Saskatoon Community Foundation has granted in excess of $8 million. Thanks to a steady growth in endowed funds, the size of grants given by the foundation has risen steadily.
In a typical year, the foundation provides grants to more than 100 local charities. The largest ever single grants from the foundation occurred this year, with a $25,000 gift to the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre for the purchase of a new forklift, $50,000 to Crocus Co-op for the kitchen in its new facility and another $50,000 to the Meewasin Valley Authority to construct an accessible pathway between the upper and lower trails behind the Delta Bessborough.
