Saskatoon Community Foundation Grants Over 1 Million Dollars in 2010!

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Saskatoon Community Foundation. The vision of Saskatoon Community Foundation is to make Saskatoon the best community in which to live. Since 1970, we have been the community’s charitable foundation, growing our endowed funds in order to grant more dollars to local charities.

Earlier in 2010, the Saskatoon Community Foundation was proud to announce its largest gift ever, a bequest of 2.9 million dollars. Now, the Saskatoon Community Foundation is proud to announce another unprecedented milestone in its history of serving the community. In 2010, the Saskatoon Community Foundation will grant over 1 million dollars to local charities.

The Saskatoon Foundation made its first grant in 1973: $600.00 to the Council for Crippled Children and Adults, which later became the Saskatchewan Abilities Council, to renovate its prosthetics workshop. In recent years, thanks to steady growth in our endowed funds, granting levels have risen significantly.

This growth in available funds has resulted in the Signature Grants, the largest individual grants ever made by the Saskatoon Community Foundation. In 2010, the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre received $25,000.00 for a new forklift; Crocus Co-op received $50,000.00 for the kitchen in its new facility; and Meewasin Valley Authority received $50,000.00 to construct an accessible pathway between the upper and lower trails near the Delta Bessborough.

Over its 40 years of service to our community, the Saskatoon Community Foundation has accepted thousands of gifts from thousands of donors, and made thousands of grants to local charities. In a typical year, the Saskatoon Community Foundation grants to over 100 local charities. Over its entire history, total grants are in excess of 8 million dollars! Because the Saskatoon Community Foundation invests donor gifts, granting only the income, all of these gifts will continue to have a positive impact for Saskatoon, forever!
