Rainbow Diversity Fund

When Neil Richards retired from the University of Saskatchewan’s main library in 2002, his thoughts turned to the years to come. He was financially comfortable and had no dependents to consider in his will. “I guess that got me thinking,” he recalls. “I’ve had other interests in my life, but I’ve always supported gay and lesbian advocacy and cultural activities.” He also thought about his late mentor Peter Millard, who arranged for his estate to benefit many of the institutions he valued. Neil, 53, wanted to do the same.

He understood that non-profit organizations often come and go, so asked The Saskatoon Foundation to meet his wishes far into the future. Investment income from the Rainbow Diversity Fund will someday go to charities providing services or undertaking research in the areas of health, education, recreation, heritage, and the arts related to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered communities in Saskatchewan. Although the fund was established by Neil, others are welcome to donate.
